Abandoned Dogs Trained for the Hearing Impaired

private dog training
I read an interesting article online the other day about what a non-profit organization in Japan

is doing about the problem of abandoned dogs. This organization, although they cannot rescue all

the dogs, have opened a facility in Yokohama, Japan that will implement a training program for these abandoned dogs to be trained as service dogs for the deaf.

Hearing dogs for the deaf are trained to alert deaf people to sounds, both inside and outside of the home. Sounds such as fire/smoke alarms, telephones, door knocks, doorbells, oven timers, alarm clocks, etc. that we on a daily basis take for granted. Without the dog a person is dependent on someone else for this.

It has been shown that a hearing dog will increase a deaf persons’ feelings of security and confidence.

Organizations involved in dog training programs for hearing dogs, look for these dogs in rescue centers, private homes, breeders and pounds. They are always looking for new sources especially with rescue groups.

They look for dogs that have a friendly disposition, alertness, intelligence good temperament and confidence. Eventually the hearing dog will have to be reliable in all types of situations. They also look for people that can foster these potential hearing dogs. Like the seeing eye dog these dogs first need to be socialized and obedience trained.

Although a hearing dog can be trained in as little as three months, most dog training programs for a hearing dog takes closer to a year.

Obedience training and socialization is quite extensive.

The dogs are then normally trained in a home-like environment to recognize and react to sounds that will be found in the new owners home.(Telephones and doorbells are different in every persons home). Part of the training will take place in the new owners home with the dog and the trainer.

When training is completed the new owner and dog do have follow-up with the trainer to make sure everything is going ok.

The new facility in Japan will also be training young people on how to become hearing dog trainers.

It is believed that approximately 10,000 people with hearing disabilities are waiting for a service dog, so not only dogs are needed but trainers as well. The students will undergo a six month training course, part of which requires them to work with a potential hearing dog for three hours a day.

Once a student completes the course they can obtain support to further their education and hopefully find a job in their related field.

Again not all abandoned dogs are rescued since this organization looks for the above mentioned characteristics in potential hearing dogs.

The agency is hoping that this new facility will raise the publics awareness of the plight of the abandoned dogs and the use of hearing dogs.

Hearing dogs have legal access to all public places when accompanied by their masters. They often wear a bright orange leash and collar to identify them. Hearing Dogs may accompany their owner into public places, such as grocery stores and restaurants since they have the same legal access rights as a Guide Dog for the blind.

So who is eligible for a hearing dog? Priority is given to candidates over 18 years of age who have at least a 65 decibel hearing loss(unaided). Also priority is given to a person living alone or with another deaf or hard of hearing person but a deaf person living with a hearing person will also be considered. The candidate must also be physically able and willing to care for and continue the training of the dog.

Yes dogs are truly an amazing creature.

Beyond Basic Dog Training

dog training equipment
Obedience instruction has become more accessible to common people with the publication of the Diane Bauman’s guide Beyond Basic Dog Training. This book is a door open towards the secrets of an entire training philosophy, and it has been successfully used even for the preparation for canine competitions. Beyond Basic Dog Training helps you understand the principles and patterns on which dogs learn, which is in fact a dual system of trial and error. With Beyond Basic Dog Training you will learn to apply corrections in a positive way, teaching your canine friend not to fear failure.

As Diane Bauman proves in Beyond Basic Dog Training, for a successful program you have to understand that from the two elements involved in the equation, both are thinking. There is the “thinking handler” in charge of the “thinking dog”, so don’t ignore you’re pet’s “feelings”, on the contrary stick to an effective development of the communication level. With Beyond Basic Dog Training you will come to achieve more than obedient behavioral patterns, you will understand your dog and learn to respect and listen to its needs. We’re talking about security, trust and confidence and lots of fun too.

With a guide such as Beyond Basic Dog Training you can have fun entertaining classes with your dog in the comfort of your backyard. At least you’re 100% sure of the methods used, since you are in perfect trust. With Beyond Basic Dog Training you’ll turn your dog into a great companion; therefore it is very good for puppies to benefit from a fast and very humane way of teaching. It is perhaps the time now to answer a simple question: why would anyone go beyond basic dog training? Simple methods will only leave the training process at a minimal level exploiting the specific animal drives as much as possible.

Going beyond basic dog training, means getting to understand the more complex structures that make your dog what it really is; you come to appreciate a wagging tail more than you would have done before. Books such as Beyond Basic Dog Training may prove to be the right choice and the best source of information for strengthening man-animal friendship. Being able to see your dog succeed in performing complex tasks is the reward of every owner and amateur trainer. Dog Training Tips – How to Stop Puppy Biting Problem in Minutes

Stop dog Biting
Have you noticed puppy seems to be fond of biting our hands and feet? What this dog is displaying is called puppy biting. It can be solved by obedience and consistency. Puppies and dogs need to chew. Chewing is instinctual to them, just like playing games are instinctual to children. You can’t teach a puppy or dog to “never chew” but you can teach them to chew on appropriate things and not your hands. For the puppy, he is probably teething and his mouth is probably painful so telling him “No” to stop him from chewing is not going to work.

Before correcting this puppy biting behavior, make him wear a leash and collar indoor at all times. This will make games of chase end quickly as you can stop him by stepping on the leash anytime. It will also give you a control by popping his leash when he refuses to listen to your voice commands. With that in place, start off by giving him a set of toys of appropriate hardness, texture and thickness to chew. Give him varieties to explore. Many puppies enjoy chewing on a wet rag. Avoid thin latex toy and the puppy’s sharp teeth can easily tore this and the ingesting the plastic can be also be dangerous for them.

Now, here’s how you can teach him to chew on the right things. When you catch your puppy or dog chewing on something he shouldn’t, give him a “NO” and pop the leash. Try giving him raw bones or milk bones. This will keep them occupied for a long time. Like any chew object, you need to supervise your dog when he has anything to chew. My dog ended up with indigestion after swallowing a bone and I had to bring him to the vet immediately.

What happens if your dog “bites” you? I find the following effective:

1. Scream like a wounded puppy. The type of noise a puppy makes when someone steps on his tail. Look extremely hurt and upset and ignore him for a few minutes. Speaking the “dog’s language” works wonder at times!

2. A sharp and almost growl like “No bite” and tap slightly under his chin. This would be imitating an adult dog growling at the puppy to let him know that he is not pleased with his behavior.

3. Do not allow the puppy to be left unsupervised for whatever reasons. He is just like a toddler and needs supervision.

4. Be consistent. Every time you see him chewing on something inappropriate, he needs immediate correction. Stop whatever you are doing and correct him immediately. And every time you see him chewing on something appropriate, praise him with a simple “good boy” to let him know that he is chewing on the right thing

How to House-Train a Puppy

House Training a Puppy
A puppy isn’t born knowing that your carpet is not an acceptable place to relieve himself. You are going to have to show it the ropes and train the puppy to hold it until it’s time for a walk outside or playtime in the backyard. Here’s a relatively easy way to train him that doesn’t require punishment.

Step 1

Watch your puppy’s behavior while relieving himself outdoors so you can detect the warning signs and intercept him when indoors.

Step 2

Stay outside as often as possible during nice weather so your puppy can develop a preference for eliminating outdoors. Help him develop a liking for surfaces like dirt and gravel by taking him outdoors to eliminate after eating, playing and sleeping, or, ideally, every 15 minutes.

Step 3

When it’s time, go straight to a predesignated area and don’t leave until the puppy urinates.

Step 4

Tuck your puppy into a cozy crate in your bedroom at night. Dogs are den animals and don’t like to soil the area where they sleep.

Step 5

Carry the puppy outdoors when he becomes restless in the middle of the night, and wait until he’s finished relieving himself.

Step 6

Supply a litter box (filled with sand or kitty litter) during the night, unless you plan on getting up every couple of hours to take him outside. If you do want to take him outside, set your alarm if you sleep too deeply to notice that your puppy has started fidgeting, and carry him outside at those times.

Step 7

Carry the puppy outside first thing in the morning so he won’t soil the floors as he walks outside.

Step 8

Be consistent with training. Consult a pet behaviorist if you have problems.

Step 9

Reward your dog with puppy treats and praise every time he successfully eliminates outdoors.

Some basic tips to help you out – however, I would suggest that you invest in a good dog training guide such as “Secret to Dog Training in my bio  ”which is the web’s no 1 dog training program written by professional dog trainer, well worth take a look, definitely can help you training your dog

Dog Training Schools

dog training schools
Have you ever wanted to learn to be a dog trainer?  If you are looking for a career as a professional dog trainer then you will need to find dog training schools that can help you learn the skill of dog training.

In order to find dog training schools to help you reach your goals here are some guidelines you should use:

Be careful of the learning style you choose.  There are many dog training schools that are actually just correspondence courses.  These courses send you out reading and video material to study.  While studying material is not wrong, the truth is that it takes hundreds of hours of hands on training in order to learn to be a dog trainer.

Determine what training you want to offer when you have your own dog training business.  There are some dog training schools that offer only obedience training while other schools will give you instruction in police work, narcotics work, Schutzhund training, service dog training, tracking, agility, and more.  If you want to have an all inclusive dog training business then you need to also find all inclusive dog training schools.

Check the geography of the school you wish to attend.  There are few dog training schools across the country.  You may be able to find one near your home or you may have to travel.

Make sure to check references.  Every year there are more and more dog training schools yet only a few of them are worth your time or effort.  Make sure to check what the recent graduates have done, the success they have had in the dog training industry, and whether or not they were satisfied with their experience.

Do your research and you will have a great experience learning the skill of dog training.

Leash Training – Dog Training

Exercising Your Dog
Leash training or lead training is the discussion of many dog trainers in this modern age and discussions of how to train your dog in the nicest possible way are aplenty. These discussions are brought about by people and dog trainers believing that pulling on the leash to correct a dog’s behavior is causing injury to the dog.

I’m not here to discus this also, but I certainly don’t believe there is anything wrong with leash training if it is done in the correct way and care is taken not to hurt the dog or give any sudden forceful pulls on the leash.

Leash dog training is equally as popular as any other form of dog training within the expert dog training community because when done properly it gets results quickly and effectively.

Leash training is used by correcting your dog’s movements and gently tugging on the leash to force the dog to go in a way they would not have originally gone and to direct them in the favoured way for the training exercise in hand. Often the problems of leash training are with getting your dog comfortable with the leash and collar so I will briefly discus the key aspects of getting your dog to behave when going for walks on a leash and the problems you might face.

Some dogs are excited to get their collar on and other are not so fond of it, train your dog to sit and stay first before learning to take your dog on a leash, many dogs like to wriggle around and run about wile you try to put a collar or lead on them so the sit stay commands will be essential.

While doing any pre-leash exercises or walks if your dog misbehaves by being too excited you should simply remain calm and not go for walks until they are acting appropriately, this should calm your dog down and act as a light punishment for them.

When starting leash training, begin in your own home and then work your way up to more populated and new and interesting places, if your dog misbehaves or is pulling on the leash constantly when they are out then discipline accordingly, and as always practice will be the deciding factor to how quickly your dog will accomplish good behavior.

Basic Dog Training Information

dog training secrets
There is a wide range of information that is available on dog training. This information covers a wide range of things including training a puppy and dealing with a barking dog to name a few things. Most of this information that is available will be very helpful and most of it will be necessary information for when you bring the new puppy home.

A lot of people believe they are able to house train a puppy by rubbing its nose in any mess that it makes, however this in fact does not work. All this way of working really does is embarrass and make fun of your new puppy and in fact your new friend.

The main secret to house training the dog is to give it a designated area that is used for this purpose. It is important to take your dog to the designated area very often in order to make him aware of what it is for and where it is located. When the dog uses the designated area it is very important to praise him in order to make him aware that he has in fact done something that is very good.

Every time that you take the dog into the correct area it is a very good idea to use a keyword to help the dog recognize what the is supposed to be doing for example “go and wee” is a common keyword phrase that is used. It is very important to remember to be patient when you are trying to train the dog as it may take a bit of time.

It can sometime be very complicated to train a dog to stop barking however it can be done but take a vast amount of time and patience. The key thing when dog training in order to stop barking is to not reward the dog for barking as they will see this as a good thing. The most important thing to remember with dog training is to stay clam and remember that it will take time and hard work
