How can I tell my roommate that he needs to get help professional help training and socialising his dog?

professional dog training
wsdmskr825 asked:

My roommate has a 2 yr. old pit-bull mix. My roomate is doing some things raising him that I don’t agree with. He is “hooked” on the fact that Karma is a pit-bull and needs to be given certain leeway (not true, pits were bred to be people friendly). We have visitors whom Karma gets excited and starts to jump on. His behavior is overly “playful”. He is trying to establish dominance, but he is not attacking. We have a roomate who can’t move through the house without Karma jumping on him. My thought is to work with Karma. To discipline him when he jumps, gets out control, and reward him for good behavior, working with the dog and roomate/ visitors who are in the house. My roomate’s thought is to isolate the dog. Keeping him seperated when we have guests in the house and even locks him upstairs when my other roomate needs to move through the house. I’ve worked with big dogs before and know some corrections, how can I broach the subject without insulting? No pit-haters please. You’re morons.

Prevent Dogs From Biting: Make Your Dog All Bark But No Bite

Stop dog Biting
Dogs are social animals, and a friendly dog in a stressful situation would never attack or bite. However, many cases of individuals bitten by dogs belie this. Thus, it is important to know how to prevent dogs from biting.

If you want to own a dog or already own one and you want to prevent dogs from biting anyone, there are two things you need to remember: first, you have to train your dog to be friendly; and second, you have to avoid putting him in stressful situations.

Dogs feel stressed by unfamiliar objects, people or places, or by unpredictable behavior. However, the degree of unfamiliarity and unpredictability is different from dog to dog. In a crowd, some dogs are friendly to strangers while others are not. What spells the difference between these dogs isn’t breed but how well they were raised. Thus, you can prevent dogs from biting if you properly train your dog.

How to prevent dogs from biting

Although there is no guarantee that your dog will never attack or bite anyone, these six tips will significantly reduce the risks of your dog attacking or biting someone:

1. Familiarity with people and environment will help you to prevent dogs from biting. Create positive and pleasant encounters for your dog with objects, people and places within the first 8 to 16 weeks of his life, especially with those he would likely encounter during his lifetime. To prevent dogs from biting introduce them immediately to various kinds of objects in your house and outside your house (e.g. your vacuum cleaner), to various kinds of people (e.g. the postman), and to various kinds of environments (e.g. your car). Introduce him also to grooming, to the vet, and to other animals, especially other dogs. Some dogs don’t think they’re dogs. You don’t want your dog to have an identity crisis, do you?

2. Familiarize dogs to being touched to prevent dogs from biting as early as possible but supervise dogs when they are with young children as much as possible. It is better your dog realizes early on that you and others mean no harm when you hold him since you can’t avoid touching him or him being touched by other people, especially when he has to be groomed or to be brought to the vet. However, how he is held is important to him. If he is held improperly, as most young children would hold him, he becomes terrified of being touched.

3. Another tip to prevent dogs from biting is to create a home for dogs where they can find peace, safety and security and teach others to respect it. Your dog would encounter at least several stressful situations in his lifetime and that’s all but normal in a dog’s life. However, if dogs has a haven to go home to, it will prevent dogs from biting, as they would more likely dash to their dog house rather than attack.

4. Tie your dog when walking him in public but not more than 8 hours in one place. Dogs tend to get temperamental and aggressive when tied since they experience barrier frustration. They are more likely to attack and bite when approached since it seems to them their territory is being intruded and, because they cannot flee, they fight the intruder. However, when walking your dog, he is better on than off a leash. Supervised dogs are less likely to attack and bite, and also you can keep a better eye on them with a leash and can prevent dogs from biting if they encounter a stressful situation.

5. Another way to prevent dogs from biting is to teach dogs with proper and productive behavior. Though it is highly recommended to enroll your dog, including your family, in a home obedience class, it is just as advisable to consistently reinforce correct and appropriate behavior. Your dog can’t tell the difference between rough-play and real-life situations so don’t show or teach him aggressive behavior, like chasing after or attacking others even for fun. If he exhibits aggressive behavior towards other people or animals, like growling when someone comes too close to his food bowl, seek professional help. It is important to stop dogs biting and aggressive behavior as early as possible.

It’s not all that difficult to prevent dogs from biting and raise them to be friendly, especially if you see dogs as another being that deserves love and attention as much as anyone else does, as much as you do. Most often than not, dogs that attack and bite are neglected dogs. So always remember that behind a good dog is a good pet owner.

If you really want to prevent dogs from biting anyone, you need a dog obedience training to help you transform you dog’s behavior problems at the shortest possible time. Did you know that you can put an end to the stress and annoyance of your dog’s behavior problems by using techniques that will give you immediate results? How To Housebreak A Puppy: Methods For Housebreaking A Dog

Have you ever wished you could just get your adult dog or puppy to stop going potty in the house and that you could learn the proper training techniques for housebreaking a puppy or dog? This type of training can be easily accomplished with four basic steps.

Many of my dog training clients come to me saying, \”I want to know how to housebreak a puppy. What can I do?\” These clients will tell me that their dog is different and hard and stubborn and just doesn\’t get it. My response is always the same. There are four main things you need to do to solve the problem. It doesn\’t matter the age of the dog or how stubborn the dog is. It all has to do with being consistent with these four steps:

1- Prevent your puppy from going potty in the house in the first place: Prevention takes two forms:

- Use a crate. The method for crate training a puppy is easy. Put the puppy in the crate or kennel and give him treats. Feed him in there. Don\’t leave food or water in the crate for extended periods and keep the crate free of toys that could be chewed up and swallowed. The crate then becomes a \’den\’ or a safe place where your puppy or dog won\’t want to go to the bathroom.

- When potty training a puppy use a leash in the house. Keep your dog tethered to you so you can make sure that your puppy doesn\’t sneak off and go potty.

2- Encourage your dog to go to the bathroom outside: This step is also easy. When housebreaking a dog you want to give lots of praise and motivation when the dog goes to the bathroom outside.

3- Correct your puppy when he goes potty indoors: Puppy training shouldn\’t be harsh but when you catch your puppy going potty in the house use the leash to quickly tug him outside. Don\’t make it painful but be fast and get the dog to the yard.

4- Get your dog or puppy on a routine: Make sure that you have regular food times and bathroom times. If your puppy has a hard time making it through the night make sure to remove the water by 7pm or so.

Follow these steps for how to housebreak a puppy and you will be in great shape.

Dog Behavior Training – the Sit Command

Exercising Your Dog
The sit command is the most popular and most used dog training command in the dog behaviour training world, and for good reason, the ‘sit’ command is the first command most dogs learn and is the basis for all other commands to be built upon.

Your dog should be taught the ‘sit’ command as soon as possible. It is the first step in obedience for your dog and should be taught as soon as your dog is comfortable with his/her name being called and is responding well to it.

So when is the best time to teach your dog this command? The timing is crucial for training your dog, once your dog is fairly comfortable with the command, it’s not a bad idea to practise often without care to other circumstances but to begin with timing and your dog’s frame of mind are very important.

You dog will respond best to your dog training methods before meals or when your dog is hungry, when your dog wants something he will be a lot more tolerable to train. Make sure you always reward your dog for doing well, as soon as they’re doing what they’re supposed to, reward them there and then, making your dog wait around will confuse your dog and make them more disobedient in the long run.

Now you know the basics of what to do and what not to do and when to do it, its time for the actual training. Before you start be sure you have treats ready for your dog when he performs well, start in a quiet room or place where your dogs attention won’t be distracted and make sure your dog knows you have treats to reward them with. Use the treat to hold above his head, slowly moving it directly above their head. In doing this, your dog should naturally fall back into the sitting position by bending their legs to keep track of the treat above. As soon as your dog’s rear touches the ground, reward them with lots of praise and the treat you used.

This may take several days or even weeks before your dog is completely comfortable with this exercise, if your dog refuses to be calm and stay in one place while you do the exercise, try using any of the discipline procedures at Dog-Behavior-Training.co.uk.

Getting angry with your dog during these exercises will not help the situation and it is always best to take time out if your feeling stressed or annoyed because your dog will sense these feelings and won’t want to cooperate even more.
