Training a dog should be an enjoyable and easy task both for you and your dog, but things can be different in Basset Hound training. It is because Basset Hounds, just like any other hounds, are extremely hard to train. They tend not to obey commands given to them because as scent hounds they prefer to follow what their noses tell them. However, it is not impossible to train a Basset hound if you really want to. Some have been successful in training their Basset hounds but only a few of them. Patience, together with your great love for your Basset hound is essential in order to have a well behaved dog.

Discover what exercise or activity your dog enjoys and start your way from there. Let him understand that training is fun! Be artistic and create fun and exciting training methods and as much as possible, vary it from time to time so as not to bore them. Limit the training session to only 10-20 minutes. Slowing down and showing resistance to work is an indication that he has become bored or he doesn’t like your training method.

Using training tools such as crate and rewards are ideal partner in every training session. Most Basset hounds obey command when offered reward, but will forget the training when reward is being offered. To do away with this, hide the reward from the dog before giving a command. Show him the reward only until he has complied with the command so as to come up with a Basset hound who follows command with or without the presence of a reward. The point here is to give him the idea that you may have a reward for him even if he can not see it.

It is also important to know the right time to start training. Making mistakes in the beginning of the training may delay the process and may not guarantee better results. Begin the training with something he enjoys so that he will be convinced to do it. Avoid being harsh and force your dog to do something which you think he doesn’t like. Consistency and determination is much more helpful.

With these tips, you will surely be able to come up with nicely trained dog. You can now aim higher levels of training such as obedience and agility training, and prove others that it is not impossible to train these stubborn four legged friends.

Opening your heart to a Pomeranian can be fun, but you must be willing to take on the responsibility of dog ownership. When you become a Pom owner, it’s up to to do everything in your power to make your pet’s life a happy one, the proper care, environment and companionship. If this sounds like a big commitment ‘ it is! But rest assured, the rewards of pet ownership far outweigh the work you have to put into it.

An often overlooked, but very important step in caring for your Pomeranian is to insure that he is properly trained. A properly trained dog will be a pleasure to both strangers and his master, but a lot of people do not take this important step and then wonder why their dog is not ‘well behaved’. Many a dog has been considered a ‘bad’ pet when all he really needed was the owner to take the time out to train him properly.

Proper training isn’t just about performing cool tricks, although that is one side benefit. A properly trained dog will be safer than one who is not trained. A properly trained dog will be obedient and come to your side should you need to call him out of harms way. A well trained Pomeranian will not be a nuisance to guests and training your dog is also a bonding experience and will enforce the fact that you are the ‘master’. You can train a dog on your own, or you can join an obedience training class and get instruction from professionals.

The Pom is an active dog who is intelligent courageous and a loyal companion. The Pomeranian may not interact well with small children and due to its small size can suffer abuse from children . The Pomeranian can make a good watch dog but can become to yappy if you do not train him to avoid excessive braking. The Pom may be hard to housebreak but are very smart and can be trained very quickly.

Another important part of Pomeranian ownership is to get regular vet checkups. A yearly check up is a must and he should have all his vaccinations kept up to date. Also, if you notice anything different in your Pomeranians behavior schedule a vet appointment right away. Oftentimes animals hide the fact that they are feeling sick and even a small change could indicate something more serious. Have your Pomeranian neutered or spayed – they WILL be much happier.

Providing a safe environment for your Pomeranian can eliminate unfortunate accidents in the home, especially for puppies. Be careful to pick up small objects your dog could ingest and make sure there are no unsafe places in the home. When guests come over, or if the kids are running in and out, make sure they know not to leave the door open so the dog can get out. Refrain from feeding your Pomeranian table scraps as some of it can actually harm your dog. Chocolate, in particular, can be lethal.

Grooming your Pomeranian not only helps him look his best but is also important to keep him in the best of health. Cleaning his ears, brushing his fur, trimming his nails ‘ these all contribute to the overall health and happiness of your pooch. Proper dental care is the most important grooming task you can do for your Pomeranian. Without regular brusing, bacteria can build up in your dogs mouth. This bacteria can break away and cause serious health problems for your dog. Make sure you brush at least a couple of times a week and have a dental check up every year!

Finally, you need to have a plan in case something goes wrong. What if there is a fire or some other disaster? Make sure someone is responsible to get your pet out of the house in case of emergency. It’s also a good idea to have a neighbor or friend that can take your pet on short notice should you be called away in an emergency.

When you let a Pomeranian into your home as a pet, you are making a lifetime commitment to provide everything he needs for a healthy and happy life. Some Pomeranians can live into the teens so consider your commitment carefully ‘ in the end I think you will see that the rewards far outweigh the work involved in caring for a pet.

Barking is part of what dogs do.  They must enjoy it.  At least many dogs look like they have fun making noise.  But dog barking behavior is a challenge to your sanity when it just goes on and on without end.  It may be fun to your dog, but it’s not to you.  That uncontrolled noise must be stopped.

Consider these three tips for changing your pet’s behavior.

1.  Look for a cause.

Dog barking control starts best with a good understanding of why your dog barks so much.  At least you need a guess.  Please take the time to closely observe when the barking happens and where you are and where the dog is.  Maybe you need some input from neighbors or friends too.  It could be most of the racket is when you aren’t home.

Boredom, isolation, lack of exercise are all common causes of too much noise.  Just with minor changes of routine you may be able to help your dog and stop some of the commotion.

2.  What about you?

Have you trained your dog to bark?  Not on purpose I know.  If your dog starts barking, do you go outside and holler?  That may be a little interaction that your dog craves.  Is it “bark” and you open the door?  Are you rewarding the dog bark behavior at least in the mind of your dog?  Try to see your own behavior as your dog would.  Hard isn’t it?  Actually maybe some of us are better at thinking like dogs than others!

3.  What about a tool?

An anti bark collar might help too.  These collars are just tools.  Don’t skip the hard part of trying to understand the barking and go right to the tool.  Actually some dogs become more neurotic and more prone to crazy barking from using barking collars.  Especially a dog that suffers from isolation may act even nuttier when dog barking collars are used.  Be careful when choosing a collar, but sometimes they can help with training.

Dog barking behavior can be improved with work.  Remember the importance of observation and with patience you can regain some peace and quiet in your life.  Plus your dog will be happier and more contented too.

House Training a Puppy Is Absolutely Vital If Your Puppy Spends Time Indoors

While there is no fool proof method for house training a puppy, crate training has proven successful for many. There is nothing more fun than bringing home a new puppy; for everyone except the person responsible for cleaning up after it!

This process effectively teaches the puppy to ‘hold it’ until given the opportunity to relieve himself somewhere more suitable. However, this method is not an excuse to ’shelve’ you new puppy for long periods of time.

This method of house training a puppy is based on the premise that puppies would rather not mess up their living area if they don’t have to. Puppies should NOT be left in the crate for too long. If your puppy goes to the bathroom in the crate because he could no longer hold it, the training process will be drastically compromised.

How do I handle house training a puppy in this manner?

If no one is in your home during the day, you should put the puppy in a bathroom or another small, uncarpeted area in your home that can be closed off. House training a puppy should take place only when you are at home. When you arrive home, take the pup out on a leash.

After you play with him for a while put him in the crate. Wait an hour or so and then take him out again. If he relieves himself, shower him with praise. If he doesn’t, put him back in the crate and try again about 45 minutes later. This process should be repeated until he is successful.

After he goes to the bathroom he should be allowed to play free in the house. Some people find it helpful to keep a diary of the times their puppy goes. While this may seem bizarre, it helps you to determine your puppy’s habits enabling you to decrease the time he has to spend in the crate.

The most important thing to remember with house training a puppy is to be consistent and offer an enormous amount of praise. The process may take a while and it is important to understand that if the puppy has an accident during the training it is OK, you should just increase the frequency of trips outside.

If the puppy has an accident after his training has stopped, don’t punish him, just revert back to the training process temporarily and you will be back on track in no time.
