to keep your dog for one year? Not including the purchase/adoption price. How much for the first year? How much after the first year? How much do you have set aside for, or are willing to spend on, emergencies? Just asking, since some people think dogs are “free”.
For me – the first year ~ $800 vet (including UTD shots and neuter), ~$500 (and probably more) on supplies like kennels, leashes, toys, etc., ~$250 on food and treats, ~$300 training (puppy class, obedience and beginner agility) = ~$2000 for the first year
So far this year, $200 vet (UTD shots, including kennel cough – it was going around), $140 on agility lessons ($10/week – they are cheap here!), and ~$150 on food and treats = ~$500
For emergencies, I have a budget of $5000, and I could afford more than that.
Add: why so much in vet bills? Because that’s how much the vet charges. I’m in Canada, I *will not* give shots to my dog, and prices tend to be a bit higher here.
Oh, and I totally forgot about grooming. I groom Kip myself, but if i took him to the groomers, add another $50 every two months. Since I groom him myself, add the cost of clippers to the first year total!
