We now understand that a great deal of learning happens when our dog is very young and the period from a few weeks old to five months is very significant. This is when your dog will learn much of what will influence their adult behavior in later life. So really, the earlier we start to teach our new pup’s and show them how we would like them to behave – the better things will be for everyone.

When our puppy grows up how would you want them to behave? You will, of course, really like them to be happy, well-behaved and confident but how do we really go about this? By introducing them in a careful way to the right scenarios we can help them to really get to know, and like people whilst they are very young. It’s a known fact that puppies will achieve the most skills and knowledge while they are at a young age, they will still keep on progressing and learn throughout their life, but at a much slower rate.

You really must then, make the most of these precious first few weeks of his life to give your pup the best possible start in life and establish a good foundation. But don’t be bothered if your puppy is beyond this stage as we can still do many other things, but these will be a little harder to do. But if your dog is demonstrating unwanted behavior then you must do things gradually.

One of the great advantages of owning a dog as a pet, and why they are so successful is that they can learn to not mess in the house. House training is usually one of the first things you will teach you pup so you will want to get it right so your home doesn’t get in a mess and also your pup will be learning about you.

You must make your actions consistent, clear and easy to understand so that you will have a good foundation to build on for every else he will need to know. But if he realizes that you are inconsistent and unpredictable, his ability to learn will be affected in the future.

Do not simply let your puppy go into the yard in case he has forgotten what he needed to do – go with him. After he goes to do his mess, try to praise him and give him something special too. Make sure you treat him straight away an do not wait until he is back indoors else he wont make the link as to why he is being rewarded.

Give him several minutes to empty himself but do not sidetrack him. Encourage him to locate his special area but if he has not done it in a practical length of time then ask him back indoors. When it does look like your pup needs to go then keep an eye on him as you do not want him to make a mess indoors. The wrong habit is learnt each and every time he makes a mistake but when he gets it right he will learn the appropriate behavior.

Please do not smack him if he has a mistake as this will only give the impression to him that you are not a nice owner and do horrible things to him. The overall success of this challenge depends of your commitment and patience. Remember – if he has made a mistake – it is not his fault.

The idea of potty training a puppy may seem more than a little daunting with all the information available today. Fact is though that it’s not hard if you have the right tools and methods. Below are a few tips that will start you on this adventure of interacting and teaching your new best friend how to behave. If you want your puppy to be happy, you need to realize that they need to be able to spend time indoors with you. Most dogs prefer to enjoy interacting and being with their human family and not living alone outdoors.

WHAT IS HOUSETRAINING?

House training is teaching your puppy not to use your house as their personal bathroom.

Contrary to some pet owners, proper crate training methods are not cruel or unkind to your pet. Being kept outside for years because you didn’t teach them that using your living room as a bathroom was not ok is truly cruel to a social animal like a puppy. Here are a number of Important Tips for Successful potty training a puppy

TIP #1

Never Scold or Punish your puppy. Dogs have few cognitive reasoning skills, if any. This means that hitting or yelling at your puppy will most likely result in confusion for your pet and not correction. So even if you are frustrated, don’t ever hit, smack, or abuse your pet either physically or verbally.

TIP#2

OK, next tip is to be consistent in your house breaking efforts. Take your puppy outside immediately after a feeding. Don’t wait for them to have an accident. The majority of puppies also cannot hold their water with a full tummy. A full stomach pushes on the bladder.

By taking them out at regular times, you lower the possibility of accidents. You also gain the opportunity to give your pup praise when they go the bathroom outside where you want them to go.

TIP#3

Speaking of consistency, use only one word to mean one thing. Don’t use Bathroom one time, then potty the next. Your pet has enough trouble figuring out what you want without having you use different words that mean the same.

TIP#4

Watch your pet when inside your home. Penning your puppy isn’t the same as house breaking. Your puppy needs to be confined to their crate whenever you cannot actively watch them. It only takes a few seconds for an accident to happen so you need keep a watchful eye to limit accidents.

The biggest problem with potty training a puppy is the need to remain consistent. The idea of moving a dog crate from the living room to the bedroom at night can be a chore. The answer to this problem is a portable doggie crate available only from the site below. Find out more about these affordable – portable dog crates used to quickly house train your puppy

If you are serious about successfully house breaking your Dog, you need a lightweight, portable and easy to use doggie crate.
Sit Stay Fetch Customer Review

I had a problem. An 8 year old son with a fatal attraction to an unruly 4 month old pup. Only two solutions came to mind. Break my sons heart, or train the dog. I voted for train the dog. Ha Ha. The laugh was on me. I started where I always start when I want to learn, I bought books, and lots of them. Before you waste one more dime on any dog training books or classes please read this article.

As I said, I bought book after book and none helped. I even took Peanut (my sons dog) to a professional trainer, at the price tag of $55 per lesson. No Red Lobster dinner that week. It didn’t work either. After Peanut seemed comfortable with Bill (the trainer) his muzzle was removed and the training began. My “good dog” lasted about 83 seconds then he bit Bill on the calf. Needless to say, that was the end of that big fun. After all the money spent on books and professional training, I like to think of myself as somewhat of an expert in the “what doesn’t work” of the dog training field.

The whole family has grown fond of Peanut and I didn’t want to find a new home for him, but he was destroying my house and being pregnant, I couldn’t take a chance he would hurt the new baby. Just when my brain was over riding my guilt, a good friend recommended “Sit, Stay Fetch” by Daniel Stevens. She said after sticking with the program and working with her rover everyday for about 2 weeks, she noticed her incorrigible mutt became almost an obedient good dog. Not a perfect dog mind you, but a good dog. I was very excited. If I could just get Peanut to quit being a “bad dog” all the time I would be halfway home free. The poor fella thinks his name is “bad dog” half the time. The book also came with a No-Risk 3 Month Instant Money-Back Guarantee, with that in mind, I figured I would try one last lousy book. Boy, was I surprised.

From the moment I opened the ebook I noticed it was like no other. The first thing I noticed was how big it was. Over 125 pages which is a combination of several booklets he wrote: Solving Dog Problems, Aggression, Rescued Dog, Separation Anxiety, House Training, and Good Dog! It’s also available as a physical book. Lots of color pictures, very unlike some of the bogus books I had wasted my money on that didn’t help one bit. I dug right in and read a quarter of the book in one night. I started putting the techniques to use with my dog immediately. I’ll admit I was a bit disappointed at first because Peanut didn’t magically transform into the paper butler after one lesson. (What can I say, I am impatient) My dog in shining armor did not appeared but what did happen was even better. After four days, Peanut started to respond. After three weeks, he was almost like a totally different dog. I wish I could have started working with him like this sooner.

To make make a long story short, if you own a dog or puppy, you need this book. This information basically covers all three categories of training your dog: fixing dog problems, tips and secrets to use in your everyday training, and buying and raising a new puppy or older dog.

My dog problems are minimal now after four months of using Mr. Stevens techniques. He comprehensively cover all facets of dog obedience training, and the book is written for young and old dog & includes extras such as dog grooming, security training, house training and a free email consultation. Sit,Stay,Fetch covers everything you need to know about how to solve virtually any dog problem, step-by-step, and it includes over 100 step-by-step photos to aid your understanding. I like to see how things work, it helps me comprehend better.

This book is not just another online downloadable dog training product. 95% of SitStayFetch’s customers subscribe to the weekly newsletter, including me. The SitStayFetch product is extremely comprehensive covering puppy house training, aggressiveness, jumping, separations anxiety, barking, coprophagia (dog’s eating dog poop), and everything in between. The book is easy to navigate and extremely informative. Everything you need to train you dog is here.

Sit, Stay, Fetch Dog Training Highlights

Free Weekly e letter

Free email Consultation

Gift Certificates

Downloadable Product

4 Bonuses With Order

No-Risk 3 Month Instant Money-Back Guarantee

I particularly liked his sections on separation anxiety, overcoming aggression, and rescue dogs. Throughout, her compassion for dogs AND owners and her extensive experience with all kinds of dogs shine through.

This is useful to owners who want to deal more effectively with behaviors of their dogs, as well as to people who do rescue work or training.

Do you have a generally disobedient dog?

Does your dog embarrass you in public?

Are you sick of excessive biting, barking, whining, etc?

Are you sick of dealing with dog aggression issues?

Do you want to know how to fix virtually any dog behavior problem?

Or, perhaps you just want the best relationship that you can possibly have with your dog…

Don’t be embarrassed, I answered yes to all the above! And I found hope in a desperate situation and so can you.

Hi all.

I have always trained my own dogs. I have a pup that I just adopted and she is about 4 months old. She was potty trained in 4 days, she will sit, laydown, and heel right beside me.

However as she will heel…if she is around a whole bunch of chaos she will just dart off. I love her to death but she is so hard headed….more hard headed than any other dog I have trained before.

So I guess I just want some advice as to how I can get her to heel, or come and actually stay put around a lot of distractions, without having to get after her a thousand times. Any advice would be awesome!

Thankyou in advance for reading )
Ok I see I have some comments. I want to make one thing clear. I do use a lead to train my dog.

I just want her to be able to do this without a lead as well.

My first dog trains on lead great….and does the same without a lead as well.

I just want to be able to train to that point that I do not need a lead.

The main reason I do this is in case my dog is off a lead and if there is an emergency….say my dog runs into the street or something and a car is coming…I want her to be able to respond to my command without having to yell, yell, yell and have my dog running mad.

I train beyond just lead training.
Just to note. I know my dog is pup and she is full of energy like any other pup. I do not expect her to do this over nigh I would just like to have some tips on how to work with distractions starting as a pup because it is the best time to start.

I know this takes a while and keep planing on working with her in the future months…years. I expect this. Just wanted some tips on where to start with distractions.

One of the best things about having a pet is the companionship they offer. Many of the idealized dreams of pet owners have been destroyed by the inability to properly house train a new puppy or dog. This is unfortunate because with very few exceptions, teaching a dog to relieve themselves outside is one of the easier things to do.

Understand that dogs are pack animals and in the wild, they choose to be very social and interact with a group. When you take on dog ownership, you are seen as part of the pack. Canines also prefer to sleep in a very clean, dry and warm place. This means that a dog or puppy will not purposely soil what they see as their home and sleeping area.

The key then is to take this natural preference and use it to develop a positive behavior of asking to go outside to relieve themselves. The absolute best way of getting the behavior you want is to use lots of praise and positive reinforcement.

Yelling, raising your voice, threatening and getting aggravated or physical with your puppy or dog will not nearly be as effective as positive reinforcement and consistency on your part. A dog simply has a difficult time associating an action with a consequence. It’s their desire however to make you happy so anything like going outside to the bathroom should be seen as something that makes you happy. This means lots of praise will get your puppy housebroken a lot faster than getting upset.

It also means that if your dog has an accident inside your home and you do not see it while it’s happening, you should not scold or say anything negative to your pup. And even better approach when you have to clean up a pile of poo is to ignore the dog completely. You don’t want to show your displeasure because your puppy will not have the ability to associate your unhappiness with the bathroom accident. The reason for this is that you don’t want to interact with the animal after finding something that you don’t like.

You should also face the fact that your puppy or dog will have an occasional accident during the training. It’s just a fact that there will be times when your puppy will not be able to control their bowels or bladder. If you catch them in the act of relieving themselves in your home however, simply pick them up and say firmly “NO” and take them directly outside to let them finish going to the bathroom.

Stay there with them and pay careful attention to make certain that they go. While outside, if they do indeed go potty, it’s very important that you focus on that positive and offer them lots of praise and physical contact heading for doing a good job. This helps connect bathroom business with outside and pleasing you.

It’s only through patience and understanding that you can successfully potty train your dog. Although it doesn’t take a lot of time, it’s important that you stay consistent with your training and realize that accidents will unfortunately happen.

Does your pet dog have a tendency to bite? It’s an issue that if left alone, can become a critical one. Here are a few facts that may help you understand why your dog is biting, and a few tips on how you can help your dog overcome their habit.

First of all, it is important to understand why your dog bites. The main reason is the canine instinct that all dogs have. Long ago, before dogs became domestic animals, they were wild and ran around in packs. The reason they bite is because of their instinct to dominate. Biting is a way dogs are able to show their authority and dominance over other dogs in the pack. Because of this instinct, your dog is biting in order to establish dominance and control.

Here are a few tips on stopping biting if your dog is still a puppy. When puppies bite, there may be several reasons for this. The first is that your puppy may simply be teething, and wants something to chew on. Also puppies bite when they are unsure of their rank in the “family” pack, and start biting to try to show dominance. If this is the case, you will want to show your new puppy that you are the leader and the one in control. Obedience training is a must, and it will also set a solid foundation for other doggie behavior issues and will also start your relationship with your puppy off on the right foot.

If your dog is no longer a puppy, but is considered a “teenager” (this is usually dogs from 1 to 2 years old) the training becomes a little more difficult, but it is still possible to rid your dog of this habit. Once your puppy becomes an older puppy, their cute chewing and gnawing becomes “play biting,” which is rougher than before. Though the nips may not break the skin or even hurt, it must be stopped because your dog is forming bad and possibly dangerous habits. By changing various aspects of the pup’s life (such as where they sleep, what toys they may play with, what time they are fed), you are able to remind your dog that you are the one in charge, and this also shows them that you will not allow them to become the dominant figure in the household. Again, formal obedience training with a professional dog trainer will do wonders; it is definitely worth the time and cost you put into it.

Once a dog reaches adulthood, the biting routine is very difficult to crack. By that time, a dog has already established its domain as the leader of the pack, and assumes authority for everything in and on your property. If the dog feels a family member is out of line, they will bite. This can be corrected, but the only reliable way is to hire a professional dog trainer that can work with you and your dog to break this biting habit.

Breaking a dog of biting is difficult and time consuming, but it is necessary; otherwise, your dog will grow up biting more and more until it becomes a serious problem. It is best if you nip it in the bud and start teaching your dog not to bite from the soonest time possible. Good luck beating the biting!

No Dog training means more to most new puppy owners than that first important lesson: Not in the House!

Teaching your Dog to go to the toilet outside the home, not in it, usually starts between six and eight weeks of age. Dogs as young as four weeks old, have been started on the house training, but at such a young age, a puppy is unlikely to have enough muscle control.

Like any dog training, the trainer’s patience is as important as the dog’s temperament. ‘Sit’, ’stay’ and other behaviours can often be learned in a few days. ‘Potty’ training can take weeks – sometimes as short as two, often a month or more.

As with other learned behaviours, you should look for signs of the impending action, then enforce and direct them with a voice command followed by praise. In this case the technique works to the trainer’s advantage, since all dogs will naturally go to the toilet. The trick is to get them to do it when and where you want!

Look for signs such as circling or squatting, then pick up the pup, say ‘outside’ and hurry outside. The puppy may circle some more, but will often squat immediately. As it begins, say “quickly” (or some other phrase) in a clear, firm (but not angry) voice. Wait until the puppy finished and give lots of praise.

You won’t always be able to catch the puppy about to begin, but don’t become angry or impatient when the dog goes to the toilet indoors. It takes time for the dog to learn to tell you it’s time to ‘go outside’. It also takes time for the muscles needed to control bladder and bowels to develop.

Young dogs need to go to the toilet every 2-3 hours, on average. If you haven’t spotted evacuation behaviour within that time, take the dog outside anyway. Issue the command ‘quickly” and wait. At first, usually, the dog will have no clue what you want.

Again, even when outside, it helps to wait and watch for the desired behaviour then issue the command. That helps the dog associate the command with the behaviour. If the dog hasn’t gone after a few minutes and a few ‘quickly’ commands, take it back inside for an hour. Of course, if you spot the pre-toilet behaviour in less time, go outside again immediately.

Dogs have a surprising ability to quickly learn what their ‘alpha’ (the leader of the pack) wants. This is almost always accomplished by associating a verbal command with behaviour, followed by praise. Punishment is usually counter-productive, and nowhere more so than in toilet training. Never rub a dog’s nose in waste.

Paper and/or crate training is preferred by some. A pup can be trained to go on a newspaper, or on one of the chemically treated puppy pads designed for the purpose. Some small breeds that live all day in the home may not need to go outside at all.

The technique has a couple of down sides however. Unlike cats, dogs will rarely go in a perfumed litter box. Newspapers (even with the top layer removed after the dog goes) will eventually create an unpleasant smell in the house.

Also, long before the odour becomes unattractive to humans, dogs can smell their own distinctive aroma. They don’t find it unattractive – quite the opposite. And that’s the problem.

Dogs that are paper trained will often prefer to eliminate indoors. Sometimes they’ll miss the paper by only an inch, creating a mess to clean up.

Once the odour is in the carpet, the dog will often seek that spot out as its proper ‘place to go’. This makes training the dog to go to the toilet outside even more difficult. Best to suffer a few accidents than to create a hard-to-overcome habit.

Patience, praise and consistency are the keys to any dog training. Elimination training is the first test for you and your dog.

By: Terry King

How would you like your puppy to behave when they grow up? You will, of course, really like them to be happy, well-behaved and confident but how do we actually go about this? We can teach your puppy by gently introducing them in the right way to situations and help them to like people too when they are young. So that your home doesn’t get into a mess, one of the first things you will want to teach you puppy is House Training.

So that you have a good basis for your pup – you must be easy to understand as well as being consistent and clear.

If however, he discovers you are unpredictable, frightening and inconsistent; his learning will be more difficult in the future.

Do not simply let your pup go into the yard in case he has forgotten what he wanted to do – go out with him. Give your puppy his treat right after he does it and do not wait until you are back inside your home otherwise he won’t know why he is being rewarded.
